| 1:00pm - 2:00pm | Class is in Session with Murat Yildiz / HistoryLocation: Emerson Auditorium + Read More "The Ottoman World of Sports: How Muslims, Christians, and Jews Created a Shared Physical Culture at the End of Empire"
My presentation explores how Istanbul’s Muslims, Christians, and Jews—gymnastics teachers, football coaches, weightlifters, journalists, athletes, and fans—created a gendered and class-stratified civic project that promoted athletics as a source of fun, beauty, and moral education. Influenced by the emerging global vogue for organized sports, all boys from the expanding middle class of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century imperial capital were expected to exercise and compete on the playing field in order to develop into moral men. Yet even as the embrace of modern athletics transcended ethnoreligious divisions, it did not erase them. Based on my new book, The Ottoman World of Sports: Refashioning Bodies, Men, and Communities in Late Imperial Istanbul, my presentation explores a lived imperial culture whose defining features were shaped by its multiethnic, multireligious, and multilingual sportsmen. |

“I love the poorly educated.” "Just remember, what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what's happening.” -- Donald Trump
In this presentation, I will explore the central role of untruth in fascism; psychological factors contributing to devotion to charismatic/populist leaders and their “big lies”; how social media in the 21st century magnifies untruths and amplifies psychological affinity for big liars; the grave danger this poses to democracy; and, the role of education to offset these pernicious tendencies. |

| 2:30pm - 3:30pm | Class is in Session with Jamie Kennard / Documentary film screening of VARIABLELocation: Gannet Auditorium + Read More Documentary film screening of VARIABLE (28 min) and Q&A with skier and film director, Jamie Kennard (‘96). Description: VARIABLE chronicles the 10 year journey of two brothers (Jamie & Doug Kennard) as they attempt to backcountry ski the Adirondack 46ers - a rugged collection of 46 mountains rising to 4,000ft and higher - in a quest to become the first to ski all 81 of the classic high peaks of the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. The duo face an uphill battle skiing to the summits, navigating through complex terrain of ice, rock, thick trees, and a seesaw of harsh and unpredictable winter conditions. Physical injury in the mountains, a midnight rescue across thin lake ice, and the tragic loss of a spouse, all test the brothers’ commitment. In a landscape where climate change now has the final say on what form winter takes, the two find themselves racing against the clock, and a disappearing snowpack, to finish skiing the last peaks before the decade-long goal melts beneath their skis. |
